How do I know if my dental deductible has been met?
It’s the amount you pay before insurance starts chipping in. Here’s how to tell where you stand this year.
The short answer
Your deductible is the amount you pay out of pocket each year before your plan begins sharing the cost of covered treatment. Once you’ve paid that much toward eligible care, the plan starts paying its portion for the rest of the benefit year.
Like the annual maximum, the deductible resets each benefit year. And on many plans, preventive care (cleanings, exams, X-rays) is exempt — the plan covers it without the deductible applying at all.
Three easy ways to check
- Your insurer’s member website or app — it usually shows your deductible and how much you’ve met this year
- The member services number on the back of your insurance card — they can tell you in a minute
- Your Explanation of Benefits (EOB) statements — each one shows how much has gone toward your deductible
- Or let our office verify it for you as a courtesy before your appointment
A few things that trip people up
A family plan often has both an individual deductible and a larger family deductible — meaning the whole family’s eligible costs can add up to meet it together.
Preventive visits frequently don’t count toward the deductible because they’re covered separately — so a year of "just cleanings" may not have moved it at all.
The deductible is separate from your annual maximum and from any copay. Meeting your deductible doesn’t mean the plan then pays everything — it pays its share of covered work, up to your annual maximum.

Frequently asked questions
Does preventive care count toward my deductible?
Often not. Many plans cover cleanings, exams, and X-rays separately, without the deductible applying. That’s good news — but it also means a year of only preventive visits may leave your deductible untouched for other work.
Does my deductible reset every year?
Yes, on virtually all plans. It resets at the start of your benefit year (commonly January 1), so what you paid last year doesn’t carry forward.
If I’ve met my deductible, does insurance pay 100%?
Not usually. After the deductible, the plan pays its share of covered services — a higher share for preventive and basic work, a lower share for major work — up until you reach your annual maximum. We can walk you through what to expect before treatment.
