Dental emergencies rarely happen at a convenient time. Whether it’s a child’s tooth knocked out at a game or a crown that pops off at dinner, knowing what to do in the first few minutes can make a real difference — sometimes the difference between saving and losing a tooth.
Below are quick steps for common situations. When in doubt, call us right away at (770) 478-1001 — we reserve time for emergencies and offer 24/7 guidance.
Knocked-out (avulsed) tooth
- Handle the tooth by the crown (top), never the root
- Gently rinse with water — do not scrub or remove tissue
- If possible, place it back in the socket and bite gently on gauze
- If you can’t, keep it in milk (or saliva) and get to us fast — time matters most in the first hour
Severe toothache
- Rinse with warm water and gently floss to remove any trapped food
- Use a cold compress on the outside of the cheek for swelling
- Take over-the-counter pain relief as directed — never place aspirin directly on the gum
- Call us; persistent pain or swelling can signal an infection that needs prompt care
Chipped, broken, or lost filling/crown
- Save any pieces and rinse your mouth
- Cover sharp edges with dental wax or sugar-free gum temporarily
- Avoid chewing on that side and call to be seen
When to seek immediate help
