Don’t Leave Money on the Table: Making the Most of Your Dental Insurance

Dr. Shannon Skiba, DDS July 8, 2026 5 min read

If you have dental insurance, you’re paying for it every month — so it’s worth making sure you actually get the value out of it. The trouble is that dental benefits work differently from medical insurance, and a lot of people leave benefits unused simply because no one explained how their plan works. Here’s a friendly, plain-English guide.

Most benefits reset every year — use them or lose them

Most dental plans run on a yearly benefit cycle (often the calendar year), and they come with an annual maximum — the most the plan will pay toward your care in that period. Here’s the key part: unused benefits usually do not roll over. When the cycle resets, whatever you didn’t use is simply gone, and your maximum starts over. If you’ve been putting off needed treatment, timing it before your benefits reset can make a real difference.

Understand these three terms

  • Annual maximum: the most your plan pays per benefit year — anything beyond it is your responsibility
  • Deductible: the amount you pay out of pocket before your plan starts contributing
  • Coverage levels: many plans cover preventive care (cleanings, exams) at the highest percentage, with basic and major work covered at lower percentages

Preventive care is usually your best value

Many plans cover routine cleanings and exams at or near 100%. That’s not just generous — it’s smart design, because prevention catches small problems before they turn into big, expensive ones. Skipping the “free” cleaning you’re entitled to often leads to costlier treatment down the road. Using your preventive benefits fully is one of the easiest ways to protect both your smile and your wallet.

Don’t let small problems wait

A tiny cavity is far cheaper and simpler to fix than one that’s been left to grow into a problem needing a crown or root canal. If we’ve recommended treatment, addressing it while you still have benefits available — and before a small issue becomes a big one — usually saves money in the long run.

A quick note on how coverage works

Every plan is different, and the specifics of your coverage are ultimately an agreement between you and your insurance company. Any benefit amounts we share are estimates, not guarantees. That said, we’re happy to file your claims for you and help you understand what your plan is likely to cover so there are fewer surprises.
