Dental Implants vs. Dentures vs. Bridges: Which Tooth Replacement Is Right for You?

Dr. Shannon Skiba, DDS June 30, 2026 7 min read

Losing a tooth — whether to decay, gum disease, or an accident — is more common than most people think, and the good news is you have excellent options to restore your smile. The three most common solutions are dental implants, bridges, and dentures. Each can be the right choice; it just depends on your situation, your health, and your goals.

Why replacing a missing tooth matters

It’s tempting to leave a gap, especially if it’s not visible when you smile. But missing teeth tend to cause problems over time: neighboring teeth can drift into the space, the opposing tooth can over-erupt, your bite can shift, chewing becomes harder, and the jawbone in that area can begin to shrink. Replacing the tooth protects the teeth you still have.

Option 1: Dental Implants

A dental implant is a small titanium post placed in the jawbone that acts like an artificial tooth root, topped with a custom crown. It’s the closest thing to a natural tooth available today.

  • Pros: looks and functions like a natural tooth, helps preserve jawbone, doesn’t rely on neighboring teeth, and can last decades with good care
  • Considerations: requires healthy bone and gums, a minor surgical procedure, and a healing period; higher upfront cost than other options

Option 2: Dental Bridges

A bridge "bridges" the gap by anchoring a replacement tooth (or teeth) to the natural teeth on either side, which are crowned for support.

  • Pros: fixed (non-removable), natural-looking, usually completed in a couple of visits, and more affordable upfront than an implant
  • Considerations: requires reshaping the adjacent healthy teeth, doesn’t prevent bone loss under the gap, and typically needs replacement after about 10–15 years

Option 3: Dentures (Full or Partial)

Dentures are removable replacements for multiple missing teeth — partial dentures fill in several gaps, while full dentures replace an entire arch.

  • Pros: the most budget-friendly option, non-surgical, and can replace many teeth at once
  • Considerations: removable and need daily cleaning, can feel less stable than fixed options, may need periodic relining, and don’t stop bone loss (though implant-supported dentures can help)

A quick side-by-side

  • Most natural feel & longevity: implants
  • Fixed option without surgery: bridge
  • Most affordable / replaces many teeth: dentures
  • Best for preserving jawbone: implants (or implant-supported dentures)

So which is right for you?

There’s no one-size-fits-all answer — the best choice depends on how many teeth are missing, the health of your gums and jawbone, your timeline, and your budget. The right next step is a consultation and exam, where Dr. Shannon Skiba can walk you through what’s realistic for your mouth and your goals, and help you weigh the trade-offs honestly.
