Porcelain vs. Gold Crowns: Which Dental Crown Is Right for You?

Dr. Shannon Skiba, DDS July 7, 2026 6 min read

When a tooth is cracked, heavily decayed, worn down, or has had a root canal, a crown is often the best way to protect and rebuild it. A crown is essentially a custom “cap” that covers the entire tooth, restoring its strength, shape, and function. Once you and your dentist decide a crown is the right move, the next question is usually: what should it be made of? Two time-tested choices are porcelain and gold — and each has real strengths.

When do you need a crown?

  • A tooth that’s cracked, broken, or badly worn
  • A large cavity that’s too big for a simple filling
  • A tooth that’s had root canal treatment and needs protection
  • Reinforcing a weak tooth to prevent it from fracturing
  • Restoring a dental implant or anchoring a bridge

Porcelain (tooth-colored) crowns

Porcelain and ceramic crowns are prized for one big reason: they look like natural teeth. The color and translucency can be matched to your surrounding teeth, making them the go-to choice for teeth that show when you smile.

  • Pros: highly natural appearance, metal-free options available, and an excellent choice for front teeth and the smile zone
  • Considerations: while today’s ceramics are strong, they can be more prone to chipping than gold under heavy grinding forces, and matching them perfectly takes a skilled hand

Gold crowns

Gold (and other high-noble metal) crowns have been used in dentistry for well over a century — and for good reason. They are exceptionally durable and gentle on the teeth they bite against.

  • Pros: outstanding longevity, resistant to chipping and wear, and require removing slightly less tooth structure; very kind to the opposing teeth
  • Considerations: the gold color isn’t tooth-like, so it’s usually reserved for back molars that don’t show; cost can vary with the price of gold

How to choose

A helpful rule of thumb: for teeth that show when you smile, tooth-colored porcelain usually wins on looks; for out-of-sight molars that do heavy chewing — especially if you grind your teeth — gold’s durability is hard to beat. But the “right” answer also depends on your bite, your budget, whether you have metal sensitivities, and your personal preferences.
